7 Skincare Rules Every 20-Something Needs to Follow!
Maintaining a healthy skincare routine is crucial for women of all ages, and every age has its own skincare rules. A survey by Simple Skincare found that only 37% of us are practicing our regimen on the regular.
I remember when I hit puberty, I used to have teenage acne, so my mom, being a devoted Pakistan woman, used to apply besan (chickpea flour) and turmeric concoctions on my face. You can make your own skincare rules according to your skin type but, by the time you hit your late 20s, these skincare rules should become a habit and you must never skip them.
Now, you must be thinking why am I emphasizing so much on developing a skincare regime for 20-something women when they have not even reached a certain age of ‘maturity’? The answer is that this is the age when you should start thinking seriously about anti-aging. Dark spots and wrinkles start to form when you reach your mid-20s. Yes, you read that right!
1. Never Trust a Skincare Recommendation B
The worst thing that you could do to your skin is to use any random skincare product, just because your friend or the cool sales girl at Sephora recommended it. You can definitely borrow your friend’s expensive, high-end eye shadow palette because you liked the swatches but think twice before using her oily-skin facial products on your dry skin.
The best thing is to consult a dermatologist before buying a skincare product. Other than that, many brands offer customers their skincare samples too, so you can try those before buying anything.
2. Use a Gentle Cleanser:
The first thing you need to do in your morning skincare routine is to use a cleanser. This will remove all the dead skin cells and sebum that your skin produced at night.
Using a gentle cleanser instead of soap can help retain the natural oils of your skin. Just remember to keep your skin type in mind before choosing a product.
3. Next Step; Toner:
Most of us skip this step because of the harsh effects of toners/astringents. If you’re like me, you would love to use a natural toner, like rose water or
4. Use Hydrating Serums:
Your almost-prepped skin is ready for a serum now. I would recommend you to add a good Vitamin C or Hyaluronic acid serum in your skincare regimen as both of them are proven to reduce the signs of aging: wrinkles and fine lines, while protecting the skin from the harsh UV sun rays. My favorites are the Spa in
You can also use serums specifically made for skin conditions, such as acne, hyperpigmentation and pre-mature aging. Also, try to apply the serums in circular motions, starting from the chin towards the cheeks. That will give an instant glow and lift to your face.
So, I know you must be thinking why should I use a moisturizer when I have already applied a serum? Isn’t that, like a moisturizer? Well, the answer is, NO!
According to Bare Alchemy, moisturizers have more thickeners and lubricating agents, so they give a more hydrating effect on the skin. Unlike serums, they don’t penetrate deep inside the skin and create a moisture barrier on the surface of the skin.
It’s important to use day and night moisturizers as both have different purposes. Observe your skin’s condition and choose a moisturizer accordingly. I am in my late 20s now and I always use the L'Oreal White Perfect Day Cream as a moisturizer in the morning and some Serene Organics A
6. Eye Cream is the New Skincare Rule!
News flash! Eye creams aren’t just for mature skin. Wrinkles and crow’s feet start appearing in your 20s, so it’s better to use a good eye cream to prevent that because nobody wants to see them on their face, right?
According to Dr. Timm Golueke, your 20s is the right time to protect the delicate eye area with preventative products. She also says that it’s the area of your face with the most movement.
You can also use a good eye serum in the market according to your skin type. So girls, never forget to apply a good eye cream in the morning and before bed.
7. Keep the Sun Away with SPF!
Now, you can skip this step in your night time skincare routine but never ever forget to apply an SPF before stepping out of the house. I know some of the makeup brands claim to have SPF but that isn’t enough; you still need a good sun protection cream to avoid the UV exposure.
Apply sunscreen at least 20 minutes before stepping outside. You can always use a good moisturizer having at least SPF 20 for good sun protection. Now, you can apply your foundation, concealer, contour, or even go barefaced to flaunt your natural beauty!
